The concept for this building was developed around the idea of children reading under a tree conopy.  The Plettenberg Bay / Knysna area is well known for its forests, both indigenous and commercial.  Tapered concrete columns (tree trunks) branch off in steel to support a large roof canopy standing free from the walls.  Two “trees” in the main space creates a large open double volume area.  This library space is well lit by a clerestorey perimeter window (all around) which floats the roof on the perimeter walls giving it a feel of lightness.  The building houses other community functions such as a community activity hall and rates pay office.  The library is well attended, especially by children in the afternoons after school.
